The haiku is hand-stitched in black thread.
 

The poem is a small piece of a longer work, not a true haiku.  I selected this small quotation because its length -- and more importantly its subtlety, emotion, and multiple meanings -- fit with the other works (and the other poems) in my autumn haiku series. Japanese maple leaves are presented three ways --- (1) as 3-dimensional 2-sided leaves loosely stitched onto the surface, (2) quilted in variegated red thread, and (3) quilted in "invisible" (nylon) thread. The 3-D leaves are two fused pieces of hand-dyed cotton, stitched both before cutting out and after being adding to the surface. Clear glass beads are added using silver-metallic thread to represent the "dewdrops" (tears) of the poem.
